Gorilla
Run 2008
Gorillas are
exuberant, enigmatic creatures that have
captured the imagination of many! They are
the largest of the apes, native to the
lowlands and mountain forests of western and
central equatorial Africa. All of the
gorilla species are under threat with
mountain gorillas thought to number less
than 720 and the cross river gorillas less
than 300. Three of the species are
registered as critically endangered on the
IUCN red list, but unfortunately numbers are
still in decline.
It is because
of these facts that the team at Evolution
Ecology, Park Hall Farm, Brookhouse Road,
Cheadle, took part in the Great Gorilla Run
2008 at the end of September along with
another 731 crazy people running a 7km route
around London to raise funds for these
fantastic creatures. Proceedings were kicked
off by Bill Oddie who fired
the starting gun and set the runners off on
their way. Bill described the event to
BBC news as “the most fun event for
conservation anywhere in the world”. The
event was a great success and raised over
£250,000 funds for a worthy cause and broke
the world record for most people in gorilla
suits in the process!
Paul Keeling
and the team (Evolution Ecology) would like
to say a big thank you to those people who
donated their money to the cause.
